Root Canal Therapy in Sunset Hills, MO

Relieve Tooth Pain and Help Protect Your Natural Smile

A painful or infected tooth can make it difficult to eat, sleep, focus, or get through your day comfortably. Root canal therapy may be recommended when the inside of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected and the tooth can still be saved.

At Sunset Tower Family Dentistry, Dr. Vince Riggio helps patients in Sunset Hills understand their options when tooth pain, sensitivity, or infection may involve the nerve inside the tooth. Our goal is to help relieve discomfort, protect your oral health, and preserve your natural smile whenever possible.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a dental treatment used to address infection or inflammation inside a tooth. The inside of the tooth contains soft tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. When that area becomes damaged or infected, it can cause pain, pressure, swelling, or sensitivity.

During root canal treatment, the affected tissue inside the tooth is removed, the inner space is cleaned, and the tooth is sealed. In many cases, a crown or other restoration may be recommended afterward to help protect the tooth and restore function.

A root canal is often the alternative to removing a tooth when the tooth can still be treated and restored.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Tooth pain does not always mean you need a root canal, but certain symptoms should be evaluated. The only way to know what is causing the problem is to have the tooth examined.

You may need an evaluation for root canal therapy if you have:

  • Lingering tooth pain
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that does not fade quickly
  • Swelling near a tooth or the gums
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums
  • Darkening or discoloration of a tooth
  • A cracked or deeply damaged tooth
  • Pain that wakes you up or keeps coming back

If swelling is severe, spreading, or affects breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care right away.

Why Root Canal Treatment May Be Recommended

When infection or inflammation reaches the inside of a tooth, it usually does not resolve on its own. Without treatment, the discomfort may worsen and the infection can affect the surrounding area.

Root canal therapy may help relieve pain, remove infection inside the tooth, and allow the tooth to remain in place instead of being extracted. Keeping your natural tooth can help preserve chewing function, support your bite, and avoid the need for tooth replacement when the tooth can be saved.

Dr. Riggio will explain what he sees, why root canal therapy may be recommended, and what other options may exist based on your tooth and overall oral health.

What to Expect During a Root Canal Evaluation

Your visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms. Dr. Riggio may ask when the pain started, what makes it worse, whether the tooth is sensitive to temperature, and whether you have noticed swelling or changes in the tooth.

From there, he will evaluate the tooth and surrounding area. X-rays may be recommended to better understand what is happening below the surface. If root canal therapy is appropriate, our team will explain the process, what to expect, and any restoration that may be needed afterward.

If the tooth cannot be saved or a different type of care is recommended, Dr. Riggio will walk you through those options clearly.

Will I Need a Crown After a Root Canal?

Many teeth need additional protection after root canal therapy, especially back teeth or teeth that have lost a significant amount of structure. A crown may be recommended to help protect the tooth, restore chewing function, and reduce the risk of future damage.

Not every situation is exactly the same. Dr. Riggio will evaluate the tooth and explain whether a crown or another restoration is recommended after treatment.

A Comfortable, Clear Approach to Root Canal Care

Root canals have a reputation for being intimidating, but the purpose of treatment is to relieve pain, not cause it. If you are nervous about root canal therapy, please let us know. Our team will explain what is happening, answer your questions, and help you feel more prepared before treatment begins.

Dr. Riggio’s advanced training in complex restorative procedures helps him look at the tooth in the context of your full smile. The goal is to address the immediate concern while also considering how to protect your comfort, function, and long-term oral health.
